Hui Program Guides
Education
Ranging from weekend intensives to weekly sessions lasting 5-8 weeks, studio-based classes for ages 2 and up are led by teaching artists supporting lifelong learning in the visual arts. Our limited enrollment practice ensures a spirit of community while presenting high quality training and practice and a framework for developing artistic skills in painting, drawing, jewelry design, printmaking, photography, digital media, ceramics, textiles, and more. Visiting artists are recruited from neighbor islands, the mainland and international arts centers offering a fresh perspective on new forms, ideas and practices. Nominal fees and scholarships keep classes accessible so that all interested adults and children have the opportunity to participate. |
Exhibition
The purpose of the Hui exhibition program is to cultivate in the public a fuller appreciation of and interest in art by spurring dialogue and promoting cultural exchange – thereby creating a space for community arts. With up to 8 rotating exhibitions each year, those living both on and off island are afforded a diverse range of opportunities to show their work including exhibitions that are themed, media-based, juried, solo, and more. Additional components include free lectures, panel discussions, gallery tours and field trips. |
Open Studio
State of the art, public work spaces staffed by artist technicians in printmaking, photography (in Maui’s only public darkroom), life drawing, digital media, fiber arts, ceramics, jewelry, printmaking and painting provide a vital resource for both artist practitioners and students. The space and support provided through this program offer opportunities for community exchange, artistic guidance, inspiration and influence, and the necessary tools to create in a wide variety of artistic media. |
Hui2 Gallery Shop
Located in the former den of the Kaluanui Estate, this boutique-style shop offers students, members and local artists a rare opportunity to sell original works of art, gaining confidence in their skill and contributing to local arts and culture. Visitors are offered a means to sustain a local business while coming away with socially-aware, authentic Maui memories. Proceeds benefit the educational programs and exhibitions of Hui No`eau. |
Celebrated Events
Offering a wide range of activities including auctions, fashion shows, salon discussions, exhibition tours with artists and curators, hands-on workshops, preview sales, music and dancing, and more, these events promise a festive occasion to congregate, communicate and celebrate. Annual highlights include Art Affair, Jewelry As Fashion, Family Day: A Community Celebration of the Arts, Portfolio Day, the Wailea Food & Wine Celebration, Old Hawai`i at Kaluanui and Hui Holidays. Additionally, we host weddings and other special events through rentals and community partnerships. |
The Kaluanui Experience
Through a historical exhibition space, estate plant guide, and multiple walking tours through our artist studios and gardens this program engages a wide range of Hui visitors with a personalized connection to our public site. Displayed photographs and anecdotes offer an educational glimpse into an integral part of the island, remains of Maui’s oldest remaining sugar mill offer history buffs a tangible experience, architecture enthusiasts study the home’s cantilevered windows and historic fixtures, artists sketch and paint any number of plants or settings, and environmentalists tour our extensive collection of more than 70 species of plants and trees. |
